Cutting Edge Fibre Technology, Goonvean Fibres is the world largest TS 16949 manufacturer of Fibre for Lead Acid Batteries

Lead Acid Batteries

Fibres for Batteries

Precision or short cut fibres of between 1.6mm to 6mm length are commonly used by manufacturers of Lead Acid Batteries to reinforce the lead oxide paste used in “pasted plate” type battery construction. Precision cut fibres are suitable for all types of plate grid construction, including cast grids, continuous cast grids, expanded metal grids, belt-pasting machines and orifice-pasting machines. Precision Cut Fibres for the Lead Acid Battery industry must conform to individual manufacturers specifications but in general the fibres should be thermally stable, acid resistant, contain trace levels (ppm) of heavy metals and radicals and be easily dispersed in powders and/or liquids.

The 1.7 dtex short cut fibre is the preferred option when the end use requires a finer diameter filament e.g. pharmaceutical and food packaging, however, all polyester grades can be used in harsher environments such as lead acid batteries due to the resistance to sulphuric acid.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is a synthetic resin prepared by the polymerisation of acrylonitrile. A member of the important family of acrylic resins, it is a hard, rigid thermoplastic material that is resistant to most solvents and chemicals, slow to burn, and of low permeability to gases. PAN fibre is therefore used in many different applications where these attributes are specified.

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging, textiles (e.g. ropes and carpets) and automotive components. It's resistance to many chemical solvents, bases and acids makes it an ideal reinforcement material in Lead Acid and Lithium Ion batteries

Polyester fibre is a very strong and stable manmade fibre that is widely used in many industries. It is resistant to stretching and shrinking and perhaps more importantly for industrial applications it is abrasion and chemical resistant (to most chemicals). The short cut 3.3 decitex grade is widely used in the manufacture of lead oxide paste with cut lengths 1.6mm and 3mm being most common.

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging, textiles and automotive components. It is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids making it an ideal material for use in Lead Acid Batteries and concrete.

Goonvean Fibres recommends modacrylic fibre for applications where a combination of softness, strength, resilience, and dimension stabilty are demanded. Modacrylic fibres can be easily dyed, show good press and shape retention, and are quick to dry. They have outstanding resistance to chemicals and solvents.
